Food for a cause.

We’ve interrupted our usual recipe posting for a public service announcement …

You’ve heard about Toms Shoes, which donates a pair to a child in need for every pair purchased. Perhaps you know about Little Man Ice Cream in Denver, which gives a scoop of rice to hungry people in Africa for every scoop of ice cream it sells.

A friend of mine, Luke Mysse, pointed me to another one-for-one project, and I had to share it. Here’s the deal:

The problem: Globally, a child dies every six seconds from acute malnutrition, the culmination of a cycle of hunger and desperation.

The solution (or one of them): RUTF (ready-to-use therapeutic food), which is a combination of high-protein peanut butter and essential nutrients. A six-week course of RUTF, three times a day, can reverse the hunger cycle in a starving child. RUTF is produced by MANA Nutrition, a charitable organization based in Matthews, NC, which distributes RUTF in Guatemala and in the Horn of Africa.

The project: Two guys (Alex and Mark) have launched a peanut butter company called Good Spread, which will donate one packet of RUTF for every packet of peanut butter (made with organic honey and sea salt) they sell. Cool, no? (And seriously, who doesn’t like peanut butter?)

They’ve started a crowdfunding project to gain startup resources to make their first production run. Learn more about the Good Spread project on Indiegogo. I’ve made a small donation to support the project. Would you consider it?

The crowd funding effort ends Monday, November 5, so if you’re moved to contribute, please do so now! Here’s where you can do so.
