Listening to the signs.

A few weeks ago, Todd Henry of Accidental Creative invited me to talk about my path from a lengthy career in publishing to working for myself as an independent journalist and copywriter. I really admire Todd’s thoughtfulness and commitment to helping creative people fully bring their passions and talents to their work. Todd and I have crossed paths many times, both socially and professionally, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with him. As it is with Todd, I learned as much from the conversation as I shared. He did a great job of recapping the dialog:

A few highlights/learnings I took away from the interview:
It’s rare that there is a “beacon of clarity” around when to make a move. It’s more like a series of subtle prompts that are easily overlooked if you’re not paying attention.

Courage is always necessary. If you wait until things are perfectly safe, you may miss your opportunity. But…

There’s a difference between a risk and a gamble. There needs to be a clear path forward before proceeding with your plan to launch something new. And…

It’s always important to make sure you’re running toward something, not running away from something. Otherwise you’re likely to find yourself in a desert space between desire and ability.
