Grandma’s foolproof flaky pie crust.
My grandma, who turns a glorious 90 years old this summer, is an amazing cook—an intuitive cook who works by taste and feel. On more than one occasion when I’ve asked her for a recipe, she hasn’t been able to … Continue reading
Pasta with sausage and other good stuff.
In my library of a decade’s worth of old Bon Appétit magazines, I know exactly which issue to reach for: September 1995, the American Restaurants Issue. Page 93. Page 93 is dog-eared, wrinkled from the steam of cooking, nearly torn … Continue reading
Basic risotto.
We have a Williams-Sonoma Collection cookbook (you know, one of those slim, almost square volumes they’ve published for years) devoted to risotto. We’ve had this since about 1996, and it is thoroughly abused: spine cracked, pages separating, the whole thing … Continue reading

Several years ago at a family gathering, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner that featured healthy grilled fish supported by an explosion of flavors. I didn’t get the recipe, but nonetheless managed to deconstruct the dish and figure out how it … Continue reading

A Spanish take on risotto.
Starchy, flavorful risotto is a mainstay in our kitchen; not only do we love eating it, we enjoy the preparation, too. I do the chopping, Rob does the cooking; risotto is a case in point for the easy harmony that … Continue reading

Homemade cheese straws.
What’s better than cheese and crackers? Why cheese IN a cracker, of course. For years, one of my mom’s go-to cocktail snacks has been cheese straws. They’re not complicated to make—just butter, flour, cheese, salt and a pinch of cayenne … Continue reading
Warm and comforting tomato risotto.
I know, I know … risotto is just SO hard to make. Actually, it’s EASY to make at home and difficult to make in a restaurant (my opinion, certainly). Risotto is a dish that’s in regular rotation in our kitchen. … Continue reading
Roasted vegetables, 3 ways.
When you cook for two as we do, it’s challenging to find creative ways to use leftovers. I look for ways to reuse, rather than reheat, leftovers. One night’s grilled steak becomes the next day’s steak salad. Roasted vegetables can … Continue reading
