Summer cocktail: Italian Spritz.

During our recent travel to Italy, I fell in love with a refreshing Italian cocktail: the Spritz. It features Aperol, a low-alcohol aperitif that has a bitter orange flavor. It’s less bitter than its cousin, Campari—the star ingredient in the Negroni, a classic cocktail that Rob enjoys and that I find to be puckeringly strong. The Spritz is a before-dinner cocktail that he and I can agree on.

THE SPRITZ COCKTAIL RECIPE

(for each drink)

3 parts Prosecco (or other sparkling wine)
2 parts Aperol
1 part club soda or sparkling water
1/2 orange slice

In a highball or large wine glass filled halfway with ice, combine the Prosecco, Aperol and club soda; stir gently. Add orange slice.

  1. This has been my drink all summer–love it!
And I’m just back from Venice where the spritz is also served with an olive on a stick! Nice touch.
