On the road: Eating, cooking in Asheville.

With our dearest friends, we spent a long weekend in Asheville recently. We had eating and drinking on our agenda—specifically, sampling some local brews, hitting a couple of casual restaurants and, most important, stocking up at the farmers’ market so we could cook in our rented cabin (see here for my provisioning strategy for cooking on vacation). Success all the way around.

If you’re traveling to Asheville, I’d recommend:

White Duck Taco Shop—in the art gallery/studio district along the French Broad River;  interesting flavor combos, great salsa, killer homemade tortilla, awesome indie vibe

Mayfel’s—great Southern classics, including my favorite: BLFGT (that’s bacon, lettuce and fried green tomato) sandwich

Farm and Sparrow—excellent artisanal, wood-fired bread

5 Walnut Wine Bar—great list of wine and local craft beer, perfect open-air atmosphere, generous pours, dog-friendly.

I posted recently about the mini fruit pie recipe that was inspired by our visit to the downtown Asheville farmers’ market. Here are a few mouthwatering images from there:

Great photos. There are so many restaurants in Asheville I’ve never heard of. Even though I’ve been there so many times. I’m keeping a list of new ones to check out! :)
